Spread the Words’ Work

Spread the Words works to increase early literacy in Africa by:
~ encouraging people to start, connect with and support libraries they’ve created, and
      ~ providing

“Education is the most powerful weapon we can use to change the world.”

– Nobel Peace Prize Laureate
Nelson Mandela (South Africa)

Did you know . . .

- 72 million children do not have access to an education? Half live in sub-Saharan Africa.

- 1 in 5 adults in the world cannot read or write?  2 in 5 live in Africa.

- It is 50% more likely that a child will live past age 5 if his or her mother is literate?

- It is 50% more likely that a girl will not get HIV/AIDS if she finishes primary school?

2012 ends the United Nation’s Literacy Decade.
There is so much more work to do.
